和 wa
This kanji is so omnipresent that it deserves its own entry. It literally means harmony or peace. But slap it on anything to make it mean traditionally Japanese.
It also represents the concept of social harmony – the distinctly Japanese ability to all wait patiently in line while pretending not to be annoyed.
Common sightings:
- 和牛 wagyū (Japanese beef)
- 和食 washoku (Japanese food)
- 和室 washitsu (Japanese-style room)
- 和服 wafuku (Japanese clothing)
- 和風 wafū (Japanese-style)
